One character films a sexual encounter with the other's knowledge, then sends that recording to a third party — the other man's father — without asking him and without warning. This is the book's central act of violation, it is treated as one, and it is not resolved quickly.A child is conditioned through a legal apprenticeship. A father has his eight-year-old son read deposition transcripts until the child stops crying. This is referred to repeatedly across the novel as the origin of the main character's inability to be comforted.A parent threatens a third party's livelihood to control his adult son.
